You’re all set for the big date night. Only a few hours to go and
you’ve gone to the gym today or ladies, maybe you had your hair
colored this week or nails done or just got a little extra rest and you’re
feeling great! Uh oh, here comes the “but”. All of a sudden
the phone rings or even more brutal, you get a text message or email that
he or she is canceling out on you. You think, how rude! This is last minute
and I planned this date into my busy schedule! And you’re right,
how rude!
Well personally, I’ve experienced this, so I understand the agitation.
Put it into perspective, though. There is no love lost here. The person
didn’t even know you! For that reason, you just cannot take it personally.
So, if you must cancel a date, here are a few tips:
1) Make sure you let the person know as soon as possible. A few days
before the date, at the very least, so the person can make alternative
plans.
2) Make sure it’s via the telephone. If you do not have their phone
number, that’s fine. Make sure you leave plenty of time, where they
will receive and be able to read your email beforehand.
3) Remember to apologize, but do it once and say it or write it like
you sincerely mean it. Saying it too many times gets annoying. Forgetting
to apologize at all is just not right.
4) If you are still interested in meeting this person, set up a rain
check at the same time that you cancel, so they know you’re still
interested and not playing games.
5) Met somebody and no longer want to meet this person? Be honest about
it, but be careful! This can mess up any chance of ever meeting this person
in the future, so make sure this is what you really want.
My advice is, if you are really interested in meeting the person do not
cancel unless it is absolutely imperative. It’s not like you have
to stay with this person 24 hours. Keep it short and just go out and enjoy!
Remember, you are not the only one putting themselves out. Everyone has
plans and a life to schedule, so be as considerate as possible.
